This interactive pack explores to what extent the 2012 Olympics will regenerate London’s East End. Students are given a mission and as journalists discover why cities bid to host mega sporting events and why London won. Next they; investigate the challenges of staging the games, design a layout and compare it to the real Olympic Park designs. Along the way students get the chance to talk to politicians, young people and local businesses before deciding how the games will benefit the area socially, environmentally and economically. Designed so all video clips, games, background information and extension activities can also be adapted for interactive whiteboards and PowerPoint presentations.

Regenerating a City: Glasgow’s Dockside and Housing Redevelopments
Age 14-18
Duration: 25 minutes

Glasgow is undergoing a huge economic and cultural transformation. A major re-branding initiative, extensive dockside developments and improvements in the housing stock (Gorbals) have enabled Glasgow to overcome the legacy of its ship building past to become one of the most prosperous cities in the UK. The programme talks to architects, developers, local residents and civic leaders. It explores the causes and effects of urban decline and strategies for urban renewal and the creation of sustainable communities.
