Choosing Sustainable Materials
DUR: 26 mins
YEAR: 2009 / KS 3-5
Product Code: SUSMA
This programme gets students thinking
about the 6Rs and what makes a material sustainable, including its
carbon footprint, whether it's sourced from renewable or recycled
materials and what happens at “end of life”. Materials discussed
include: wood, plastic and textiles. Also, we look round the UK's
first zero carbon housing project and visit the Smile Plastics
factory where anything from mobile phones to children's wellingtons
are turned into building materials.

Testimonials
"An excellent resource for AQA GCSE Product Design and Resistant Materials and also at AS/A2”
Clive Wood,
Inspector/Advisor Technology, Conwy, Denbighshire,

Choosing Sustainable Materials clarifies many of the misconceptions students have about the differences between renewable materials and ones which can be recycled. The environmentally friendly building used in the case study puts a great deal of the theory into a practical application which is ideal for the written paper.
Brian Russell,
Director for D&T, Dixons City Academy
Sustainable materials is a very good support to “The Sustainability Handbook” and uses the CO2Zero building project as its major focus. The CO2Zero is based in Bristol and is a level 5 Code for Sustainable Homes. After the Introduction there are three short video chapters that focus on Renewable Materials, Recycled Materials and the End of Life of a product.
Each of the three sections are very well produced and provide a good teaching and learning resource for both GCSE and A level Design and Technology. In addition to the film clips there is also an excellent set of classroom resources in Word, PDF and Powerpoint formats. These can be used in the classroom or as homework activities and the way that they have been structured means that pupils really have to focus on the content.
This is an excellent resource for AQA Product Design and Resistant Materials at GCSE and also AS/A2 with AQA. All teachers of Design and Technology will find this a very useful addition to their teaching resources that can be very effectively used over a number of lessons.

Inspector/Advisor of Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, former President of NAAIDT
